University Safety Office
As the University Safety Office we aim to deliver a comprehensive proactive quality Safety Service to the University as a whole, including raising awareness and engendering appropriate behaviours and attitudes to
occupational health and safety. These provisions cover advice,
training,
policy,
auditing, monitoring, permissioning and investigation for staff, students,
contractors and visitors to the University. The USO is also promoting best practice within the University
Note:
The University Safety Office is administratively a part of the Human Resources Directorate along with the Occupational Health Service and the Staff Development Unit.
USO Training Provision
The USO has numerous courses on offer - mostly free of charge to staff and students at the University (some are also available to people from other organisations. If you cannot find a course to suit please let us know and we will see if we can deliver or source training for you. Next training courses:

Minutes of the October University Safety Committee published
The Minutes of the University Safety Committee are now published on this site. Registered users of the USO site can log in to see full accompanying documents owned by the Committee (not including documents from Committees reporting to the USC). The main minutes and agenda documents are publically available and can be seen on the main University Safety Committee page.

ESS Awarded with Gold
ESS has been awarded a GOLD NE Better Health at work award, which is a marvellous achievement leading the whole university. ESS staff have been involved in running and participating in many events over the last few years, highlights include the SHE conference, stress awareness days, and planting the Cockle Park Jubilee Wood. This initiative has now taken off across the whole university. Special thanks have been given to Gary Morton (the ESS Safety Officer) for leading on this and to the ESS Health Advocates for their work.

The HSE is to start charging for visits from April 2012.
The details are provided in the
HSE Consultation document and provide details of the charges (expected to be £133 per hour - about £750 for a visit resulting in a letter) and they will be introduced with a billing system and enforced cost recovery in a revised version of the annual Health and Safety (Fees) Regulations.
